Canje Summer Menu
finsickle supper club
Supper club made it to Canje for the summer menu. We lucked out and attended on a night they were partnering with a restaurant from Houston—ChopNBlok. We tried two of the ChopNBlok offerings, and lusted after a couple of others, but there is only so much you can eat at one sitting.
The BlackStar curry was stunningly good. Waakyu fried rice, big fat shrimp, and Vassa Curry. Delicate and dozens of flavor notes. I will definitely try to find that restaurant if I am ever in Houston.
Grilled Beef skewers. Peanut pepper spice. Just eating off the bone. Really tasty.
From the Canje part of the menu, it was just one great bite after another.
Smoked Avocado Escheche. Well…smoked avocado, pomegranates pepitas. Floating in some sauce that was divine. They tried to take it away before we could soak the last droplets with the Roti. They almost lost some fingers, but fortunately, the staff had quick reflexes.
Grilled Cabbage. One of the best, if not the best, grilled cabbages you will find in all of Texas.
Akara which was a black-eyed pea fritter with hot pepper aioli and crab and salt fish. Now you might think a black-eyed fritter doesn’t sound tasty. But add in the crab and salt fish and aioli, and you got a great dish. Plus it comes with a great dipping sauce.
Wild Boar pepper pot. With cassareep, orange peel and ginger. Wild Boar from Fredericksberg and cassareep from home.
Cassareep is cassava root boiled down. Molassesey and barbecuey This stuff is so—o—o good. Once again, scraping the bowl with the Roti.
The chef came out and talked with us, and we thanked him for helping provide food for the flood victims. He talked about giving back to the community.
At the end, despite nearly maiming one of the staff, we were escorted to the kitchen and got our pictures taken. What a honor!!!
Please go to Canje this summer. It will be a taste sensation,
